Tomoko Sauvage
Tomoko
Sauvage is a musician working on self-developed instrument with
water-filled porcelain bowls and hydrophones for electro-acoustic
performances, compositions and installations.
Born in Yokohama, Japan,
Tomoko grew up with classical then jazz piano education. While
searching for her own sound after influenced by musicians like Terry
Riley and Alice Coltrane, she met jalatarangam, a rare, disappearing
instrument of traditional south Indian music, porcelain bowls filled
with water tapped with bamboo sticks. Fascinated by its fluid sound
material, she has been developing 'electro-aquatic' instrument in
exploring sound texture of water.
In her recent
performances and compositions, Tomoko captures the subtle sound of
water waves and drops resonating in porcelain bowls with hydrophones
(underwater microphones), then uses simple electronics to weave an
aquatic soundscape with this lively sound source. She literally plays
with water by touching and agitating it or by making water drops fall
into bowls. She lately started to use audio feedback with hydrophones
and loudspeakers, which creates drones swaying with water waves. The
uncontrollable elements such as sensitivity to room acoustics and
irregularity of water movement play an important role in her music. In
this project, her musical search develops in a simple attitude of
listening to nature.Tomoko has been performing in different types of
music scenes and venues mainly in Europe. The unstable, fragile and
site-specific nature of her instrument and slowness of its music make
her think more and more of realizing longer performances in
installation settings, which enable an intimate listening.

Since
2007, Tomoko has performed at: Cave12 (Geneva), High Zero Festival
(Baltimore), Electronic Music Foundation (New York), Musée du quai
Branly; Eglise St-Merri; Les Instants Chavirés (Paris), Festival
Electroni[k] (Rennes), Pannonica (Nantes), Q-O2; les ateliers claus
(Brussels), Störung Festival - Hydrophonia (Barcelona), Ausland
(Berlin), Festwochen (Vienna), TEKS (Trondheim, Norway), Tone Festvial
(Uk), Borderline Festival (athens, Greece), Flussi Festival
(Avellino, Italy) among others. Her works have been released on labels
such as either/OAR ("Ombrophilia", solo album, 2009, USA), dokidoki
editions ("Asper#1 - The Naked Island", live recordings, split LP,
2009, FR) and Musica Excentrica ("Apam Napat", album, duo project with
Gilles Aubry, 2007, Russia), and also in a number of compilation albums.
Her works have been discussed about by Momus in the Wire magazine, by
David Jisse and Christian Zanésie in a radio program of France Musique,
and also featured in National Public Radio (USA), Radio Libertaire
(Paris) and Radio LoRa (Zurich).
She lives in Paris since 2003.

頃、南インドのジャラタランガムと呼ばれる、今日では消滅しつつある珍しい伝統楽器に出会う。水を入れた磁器の器を竹の棒で叩く打楽器。流動的な素材と至
極シンプルな構造に魅かれ、水の様々な感触の音色を探りながら、彼女独自の、「エレクトロ・アクアティック」楽器を発展させる。
彼女の作品、コンサートでは、ハイドロフォン（水中マイク）で捕えた、磁器のなかに落ちる雫や、水波の繊細な音と、音楽用電子機器を限りなくシンプルに用
いることで、音源である水の音を展開させながら音の風景が紡ぎ出されている。水に触れ、掻き混ぜ、水滴をうつわに垂らすことで、文字通り水と共に音楽が奏
でられている。
最近では、スピーカーとハイドロフォンを利用したフィードバックの技術を利用し、水の揺れと共にドローンを生み出す作曲も行っている。 また、美術館やギャラリーでのサウンドインスタレーション作品（磁器と水、さらに氷を組み合わせた作品）も発表している。
氷の塊はうつわの上に吊るされ、彼女の演奏さながら、氷が徐々に溶けるに従い、雫の赴くままに音が奏でられる。
トモコ・ソヴァージュは、自然の素材という不安定で流動的な存在を扱う彼女の特有の楽器と、その音楽のもつ特異な
速度を追求することで、様々な演奏形態の
可能性を引き出している。それはサウンドインスタレーションのように音楽のあいだを自由に行き交い音楽を聴くことさえ可能にしている。
トモコ・ソヴァージュはすでにヨーロッパ、日本、アメリカの様々なシーン、異なった会場で演奏、展示をし、現在活躍の場をさらに広げている。

Tomoko Sauvage, Japanese musician and sound artist
based in
Paris, has developed a natural synthesizer, an electro-acoustic system
using hydrophones (under-water microphones of Aquarian Audio)
immersed in porcelain bowls of different sizes filled with water.
She plays with water waves and drops resonating in the bowls, also with
her new sonic exploration, audio feedback creating waving drones and
natural overtones. Since her solo album, "Ombrophilia" was released
from either/OAR (US) in 2009, she made performances in Europe, US and
Japan, often in solo but also in collaboration with Momus, MC Schmidt
(Matmos), Gilles Aubry, André Gonçalves… In 2011, a new set of
porcelain bowls was created during her residency at La Pommerie (FR) in
collaboration with Ceramic Research Center of Limoges (CRAFT).
2016/2017 : Tomoko Sauvage and Francesco Cavaliere
collaborate to play Green Music, a piece by Danish fluxus composer,
Henning Christiansen.
In their installation / performance, surrounded by a
small collection of green curiosity, they play green sculptures, icons,
plants, tea, minerals, glass, ceramic and green-painted synthesizers:
Christiansen painted his ear and violin green.

Tomoko
Sauvage, musicienne et artiste sonore japonaise installée à Paris, a
élaboré un système électro-acoustique à partir de bols de porcelaine de
différentes tailles remplis d'eau et dans lesquels sont intégrés des
hydrophones(des micros sous-marins Aquarian Audio). Elle joue avec le
son des vagues et des gouttes d'eau qui résonnent dans les bols et elle
en explore l'électroacoustique, directement liée à l'espace (en
particulier le Larsen). Depuis la sortie deson album solo "Ombrophilia"
chez either/OAR (US) en 2009, elle a réalisé de nombreuses performances
en Europe, en Asie et aux Etats-Unis, en solo ou en collaboration avec
Momus, MC Schmidt (Matmos), Gilles Aubry, André Gonçalves…
En 2011, une nouvelle série de bols en porcelaine a
été réalisée pendant la résidence à La Pommerie (Corrèze) en
collaboration avec Centre de recherche de céramique CRAFT (Limoges).
Entre 2012 et 2017, Elle développe plusieurs installations lors de résidences et présente ses nouveaux projets en Europe.
Elle collabore avec divers musiciens, Jean-François Pauvros ou encore Francesco Cavaliere pour le projet Green Music.
